The Virginia Living Museum
On Wednesday April 18, join your BIW colleagues in a splendid adventure at The Virginia Living Museum - the first living museum east of the Mississippi. Your $40 ticket includes not only a bountiful repast of food and beverage, but complete access to this natural treasure.
Virginia's natural wonders, among the country's most diverse, come alive at The VLM, which combines elements of a native wildlife park, science museum, aquarium, botanical preserve and planetarium. The exhibits showcase all of the state's regions from the upland coves of the Appalachian Mountains to the salty offshore waters of the Atlantic Ocean and feature more than 245 different animal species.
Highlights include:
- The cool, moist Appalachian Cove - a two-story, glass-covered walk-through habitat - features a waterfall, a swift-running mountain stream and lake filled with mountain fish, plus free-flying birds where the sounds, sights and communities of native plants and animals are like taking an instant field trip to the mountains.
- The ¾-mile Outdoor Boardwalk winds through woods, lake and wetlands area, showcasing animals native to Virginia in naturalized habitats - beavers, river otters, bald eagles, bobcat, deer, wild turkeys, skunk, opossum, gray fox, red fox, coyotes and red wolves.
- The dramatic, walk-through Coastal Plain Aviary is filled with coastal birds such as pelicans, herons, egrets and ducks - in all, more than 16 species of birds that either breed in Virginia or fly through the state during spring and fall migration along the coastal flyway. With its elevated boardwalk, this 5,500 square-foot outdoor enclosure takes visitors into the treetops to view the birds.
Tickets for this not-to-be-missed event can be purchased through the online registration page. Visit The Virginia Living Museum website for more information.
